Discover the Heart of County Clare

ABOUT ENNIS

Why Ennis is Special

A Gaelic medieval town dating back to the 12th century, Ennis was shaped by the O’Briens, Kings of Thomond, who invited the Franciscans to establish a friary here in 1240. The town’s rich heritage is intertwined with some of Ireland’s most influential historical figures, including Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, and Éamon de Valera.

There’s plenty to explore, from the 13th-century Franciscan Friary to the fascinating Clare Museum, but the best way to truly appreciate Ennis is on foot—immersing yourself in its history, stories, and unique character on a guided walking tour.

So Many Things to Do in Ennis

Beyond history, Ennis is a thriving hub of culture, shopping, and food. Known as The Boutique Capital of Ireland,’ the town is home to excellent independent shops, as well as a fantastic selection of cafés, restaurants, and traditional pubs. Live Irish music is never far away—Clare is the heartland of traditional music, and Ennis’ friendly, colourful pubs are renowned for world-class sessions. In fact, we were recently awarded the title of ‘Ireland’s Friendliest Town’!
