It is a Gaelic Medieval town, dating to the 11th Century and was formed between two streams on the river Fergus when the O’Briens, Kings of Thomond, invited the Franciscans to establish a friary in 1240. It has a rich heritage and is closely aligned with some of the greatest movements and personalities associated with change in Irish political history, including ‘The Liberator’ Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell and Eamon DeValera.
There’s plenty to see and do in the town – from the Franciscan Friary that dates back to the 1240’s to the Clare Museum that offers a fascinating look at the area’s history. But a walking tour of the town really is the best way to appreciate the town and its unique history and character.
The shopping is also great in Ennis which has long been known as ‘The Boutique Capital of Ireland’ and there are many delicious eateries, bars and restaurants. You won’t have to look hard to find some live traditional music either. Clare is acknowledged as a heartland for traditional Irish music and Ennis being the main town has numerous colourful and friendly pubs which specialise in Irish music of the highest quality.
Ennis is also part of the famous Wild Atlantic Way which is one of the longest defined coastal routes in the world! As such it provides a great base to explore the many beautiful attractions on this route including the Cliffs of Moher and the Loop Head Peninsula.
